BETTING ODDS: When Will New York Giants QB Daniel Jones Be Benched?
For now, the New York Giants are sticking with quarterback Daniel Jones, says head coach Brian Daboll, despite the veteran signal caller’s rocky first game this season.
“Yes,” Daboll said when asked after the 28-6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings whether Jones would be the starter going forward, according to the New York Post.
In the Sept. 8 season-opening defeat, Jones went 22-of-42 with 186 passing yards and no touchdowns. He was sacked five times and threw two interceptions, including a pick six by Vikings’ linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel.
Fans were irate.
Outside MetLife Stadium in New Jersey after the game, some heckled Jones at the players’ exit and, in the parking lot, burned his jersey, Fox News reported.
Instead of calling him by his Danny Dimes nickname, fans mocked him by referring to him as Danny Pennies.
Will Tommy Cutlets Get A Shot?
Despite the head coach’s vow to stick with the 27-year-old former first-round pick, questions remain about Jones’ staying power. He is in the second year of a $160 million, four-year contract, having missed games last season to repair the ACL in his right knee.
If the Giants give up on Jones, backup quarterbacks Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito are waiting in the wings. Last season, DeVito, a New Jersey native, became a fan favorite, earning the nickname Tommy Cutlets, a nod to his love of his mom’s cooking. The team also could look to sign another quarterback.
Bettors have a couple of things to keep in mind when evaluating Jones’ future with the Giants.
In addition to the coach’s current faith in him, the team schedule could have an impact on how deep Jones goes into the season.
In Game 2, the Giants travel to the nation’s capital to face the Washington Commanders, led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, last season’s Heisman Trophy winner at LSU. The Commanders lost their opener on the road to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 37-20, and are not regarded as one of the league’s top teams. Washington only has a 26.7% chance of making the playoffs this season, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.
After that, the Giants go on the road to face Cleveland and then have a home game against the Dallas Cowboys. The Sept. 26 showdown with the Cowboys, a heated NFC East rival, could be decisive for Jones.
