The CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, was fatally shot Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan, multiple news outlets reported, citing police sources. The 50-year-old was shot just before 7 AM local time near the hotel on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. News outlets on scene added that there was a large police presence in the area.

USA Today added that a New York City Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson confirmed that a 50-year-old male was fatally shot outside the Hilton. However, neither authorities nor UnitedHealthcare have revealed the victim’s identity. The suspect, who was reportedly wearing a black hoodie, is on the run.

UnitedHealth Group was hosting its annual conference for analysts and investors on Wednesday. CEO Andrew Witty, according to STAT News, said: “I’m afraid that some of you may know we’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members, and as a result I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today, which I apologize for. I’m sure you understand. We’re going to go offline now from the broadcast. We’ll share with you an alternative mechanism to update you. I apologize for bringing things to a close, but I hope you’ll understand.”
