Capital Region Getting Another Pro Basketball Team
Today, the sports world made a big announcement about Upstate New York: Another professional basketball team will be coming to the Capital Region.
Big news for basketball fans in Schenectady. The Basketball League (TBL) is bringing its fast-paced, high-energy action to the area with the launch of the New York Phoenix. They will be a direct competitor of the Albany Patroons.
Set to tip off in 2025, the Phoenix will call the historic Armory Studios NY, formerly the Washington Avenue Armory, their home court. This stunning venue, built in 1936, is no stranger to hosting exciting events, from basketball showdowns to boxing matches.
But that’s not all, his new team already has a natural rival just down the road, the legendary Albany Patroons. Get ready for some intense local matchups that are sure to ignite the Capital Region’s sports scene.
TBL President Dave Magley confirmed the arrival of the Phoenix, teasing even more details to come. The owner will be announced tomorrow (Tuesday, November 19th) at a press conference.
This isn’t just about basketball. The Phoenix joins a vibrant lineup of Capital Region sports teams, including the Adirondack Thunder and the Tri-City ValleyCats. And the area’s sports scene is getting more exciting with plans in motion for an 8,000-seat stadium in Albany for a proposed NextPro Major League Soccer team.
With the Phoenix taking flight and new developments like the Mohawk Harbor Event Center on the horizon, the region is shaping up to be a powerhouse for sports and entertainment.
