Carrot recall hits NY stores: Check the brands affected
Multiple brands of organic carrots sold in several major retailers in New York have been recalled due to possible E. coli contamination, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Sunday. California-based Grimmway Farms initiated the voluntary recall on Saturday as thirty-nine cases have been reported in 18 states, including five in New York, resulting in 15 hospitalizations and one death in California as of Nov. 16, the recall notice states.
The carrots currently on store shelves should not be affected, the CDC says, but you may still have the recalled products in your fridges and freezers.
“The company has also notified its customers who received the recalled product directly from Grimmway Farms and requested that those customers notify distributors of the recall products,” Grimmway Farms’ recall notice states. “The implicated farms are out of production, and none of the recalled carrots have tested positive for E. coli O121:H19.”

Symptoms of E. coli to look out for
Most people who come in contact with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli experience severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, which is often bloody, and vomiting, according to the CDC.
Symptoms typically start 3-4 days after you’ve swallowed the bacteria and most people recover without any treatment after 5-7 days. However, some may develop serious kidney problems and need to be hospitalized.
If you have any of these severe E. coli symptoms, you should call your healthcare provider:
- Diarrhea and fever higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit
- Diarrhea for more than three days that\’s not improving
- Bloody diarrhea
- So much vomiting you can’t keep liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, including not peeing much, dry mouth and throat and/or feeling dizzy when standing up
What to do if you’ve purchased the recalled products
If you have any of the recalled carrots in your home, throw them away or return them to the store you purchased them at. Be sure to also wash any items and surfaces that may have come in contact with the affected product with hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
If you have any questions or have any of the recalled products, you can reach out to the company’s customer services desk Monday-Friday between 8 a.m.-8 p.m. by calling 1-800-301-3101 or visiting grimmway.com.
