Cleveland comes out hot
The Cleveland Cavaliers have started the season 3-0 after dismantling the Washington Wizards 135-116 on Saturday night. The Cavs were led by Donovan Mitchell‘s 30 points, while Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland each scored 23 points. Allen was particularly efficient, shooting 10-for-10 from the floor. Overall, the Cavs shot 54 percent from the field while defeating the Wizards for the 9th straight time overall. The Cavs are now 3-0 for the first time in four seasons.
The Cavaliers have started out the season as one of the more efficient teams in the league. They are shooting nearly 55 percent from the field overall and averaging nearly 130 points per contest through their first three games. Last season, the Cavs finished just 23rd in points per game while finishing 13th in field goal percentage. They were 19th in the NBA in 3-point shooting. On the defensive end, they finished last season 7th in scoring defense. They were an impressive fourth in field goal defense and 18th in 3-point defense. The Cavs were 23rd in the league in total rebounding, but that number was not helped by several missed games from Evan Mobley Jr. and Allen. They were 16th in turnovers per game and 22nd in pace of play.
Key Injuries: SG Max Strus and F Emoni Bates are out.

Knicks look for two in a row
The New York Knicks have already seen the lows and highs of an NBA season in just two games. In the season opener against the Celtics, the Knicks were ambushed by the Celtics’ perimeter shooting and fell 132-109 in Boston. In game two, in a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Knicks jumped all over the visiting Indiana Pacers to pick up a decisive 123-98 win. Newcomer Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points and 15 rebounds, while Jalen Brunson poured in 26 points in the victory.
“I loved the way our guys responded,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. “The fight we showed was a lot greater.”
The Knicks are now 1-1 on the season and have a chance to knock off another Eastern Conference foe on Monday when the Cavs visit. The Knicks are expected to contend for the Eastern Conference crown this season after finishing with the second-best conference record last year and advancing to the semifinals. In 2023-24, the Knicks finished 18th in points per game. They were 21st in field goal percentage and 11th in 3-point shooting. The additions of Towns and forward Mikal Bridges should only add more firepower to their offense. On the defensive end, the Knicks were fifth in scoring defense last season but just 19th in field goal defense and 21st in 3-point defense. After struggling against Boston in the opener, the Knicks held Indiana to just 3-of-30 from beyond the arc. New York was fourth in the NBA in rebounding last year and finished 11th in turnovers. They were just 27th in pace of play.
Key Injuries: PF Precious Achiuwa and C Mitchell Robinson are out.

The Cavs have been efficient and shooting the ball extremely well through their first three games. Now, however, they run into a Knicks team that is one of the most versatile defensive teams in the league. The Knicks’ acquisitions of Towns and Bridges give them five players on the floor that can guard nearly any position. That will be invaluable against a Cavs’ team that has shown the ability to move the ball with precision thus far. The Knicks recovered nicely from their opening night loss to the Celtics and completely shut down the Pacers’ perimeter offense, the best in the NBA in 2023-24. I look for the Knicks to bog down the paint for the likes of Mobley and Allen, and once again limit the perimeter shooting of the opposition. Offensively, the Cavs will have a hard time slowing down Brunson and Towns will force Allen away from the basket with his long-range shooting. I like the Knicks in this matchup on Monday night.

The Cavs come into this game averaging 128 points per game through their first three games. The Cavs are also shooting at a near-55 percent clip through three games as well. The Knicks come into this contest after putting up 123 points in the win over Indiana. Even in the loss to Boston, the Knicks’ offense was effective, shooting 55 percent from the floor despite Boston’s 3-point prowess at the other end. While neither of these teams plays at a fast pace, both are extremely efficient.
Take the over.
