Center Jimmy Morrissey faces uphill battle to make Giants’ roster

Jimmy Morrissey would appear to face an uphill battle in an effort to find a role as a backup offensive lineman with the New York Giants in 2024. Let’s discuss Morrissey as we continue player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

The skinny

Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 305
Opening day age: 26
Position: Center
Experience: 3
Contract: One-year, $985,000 | 2024 cap hit: $985,000 | Guaranteed in 2024: $0

Career to date

Morrissey was selected in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, 230th overall, by the Houston Texans. Over two seasons and part of a third, he played in nine games with four starts. Most of his snaps have come at center, while a handful have been at left guard.

The Giants signed Morrissey to a reserve/futures contract in late January.

2024 outlook

John Michael Schmitz is the unquestioned starter at center for the Giants. Austin Schlottman, with 67 games (11 starts) of NFL experience at center and both guards spots, was signed in free agency to be the backup center.

That likely leaves Morrissey on the outside looking in. Perhaps he could land on the practice squad or have a shot at the 53-man roster if either Schmitz or Schlottman suffers an injury.
