China’s new supersonic jet set to transform travel between London and New York

China is taking aviation to a new level as Beijing-based Space Transportation tests a new hypersonic passenger plane which can fly from London to New York in only two hours.

The new supersonic jet cost £10.3 billion ($13 billion) to make and can fly twice as fast as the ‘Son of Concorde’.

China’s hypersonic passenger plane looks to change travel from London to New York after test flights saw the new-age jet reaching speeds of 3,106 mph

This would make Space Transportation’s new jet plane reach speeds that are four times the speed of sound, Chinese media boasted.

The Jundouyun engine, which lies at the core of the jet’s ingenuity, was seen to push the jet to travel twice the speed of the Concorde after recent tests.

Test manufacturers also noted the jet managed to reach altitudes of more than 65,600 feet.

These astounding heights were achieved by removing the turbine parts and compressors which is found in most rockets.

“This engine has significant commercial potential in the field of high-speed flight within near-space environments,” stated the company to the South China Morning Post.

“This test flight provided key performance data on the engine, validating critical systems including the fuel supply, electrical and control systems.

“It also confirmed the engine’s stability and reliability, marking a major milestone in its development from a prototype to a fully functional product.”

Space Transportation hopes to develop the prototype into a passenger plane that could take its first flight in 2027.

Once completed, the new plane could see travel between London and New York on an aircraft travelling at speeds of 5,000kph (3,000mph), potentially taking travel between these two major cities in as little as in 1.5 hours.

This will completely revolutionise travel and be the first of its kind as the fastest transatlantic crossing for a Concorde was previously recorded at 2 hours and 53 minutes, with standard air travel taking around eight hours.

The US’s new supersonic aircraft known as the X-59 Quesst has also been making waves and is expected to cut flying time from London to New York City to just 3.5hours.

The X-59 Quesst is currently being built in a collaboration between Nasa and Lockheed Martin.
