City secures funding to build Greenway stretch in Inwood
The city has secured a $96 million federal grant to build a section of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway in Inwood, officials said Monday.
The 1.35-mile segment will extend along 10th Avenue from West 201st Street to West 218th Street, connecting to Inwood Hill Park at West 218th Street and the Bronx via the Broadway and University Heights bridges, City Hall said in a press release.
The section is one of the “last major gaps” in the greenway, which will provide a continuous cycling and walking route around Manhattan, according to the release.
The project will bring safety upgrades to the stretch, including “a new plaza, sidewalk extensions, pedestrian islands, bus boarding extensions, raised crosswalks, and improved lighting under the elevated subway line,” the release said.
The Harlem River Drive below 10th Avenue will get cyclist and pedestrian-friendly upgrades, and a full pedestrian plaza will be installed on Post Avenue between 10th Avenue and West 207th Street, the release added.
City Hall said the project’s preliminary design phase is expected in spring 2025, with public engagement set to follow.
The city on Monday also said it has secured a $164 million federal grant that it will put toward its efforts to modernize the Brooklyn Marine Terminal.
Both grants were issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the release noted.
“We’re bringing thousands of jobs and billions in economic impact to our city by transforming the Brooklyn Marine Terminal into a modern, 21st-century maritime port and mixed-use community hub, and we’re bringing new public space and safety improvements to Inwood with our greenway along 10th Avenue,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement.
“This helps get us that much closer to having New Yorkers be able to bike and walk all the way around Manhattan on greenways. And as we kick off Climate Week, these investments will help us build a cleaner, greener city for all New Yorkers,” he added.
