Commanders announce captains for Week 2 vs. Giants

The Washington Commanders will be playing in front of a packed crowd when they take on the New York Giants for Week 2, and just as head coach Dan Quinn promised, there will be a new group of captains leading them on the field.

Quinn announced during his Friday press conference that linebacker Frankie Luvu, center Tyler Biadasz and safety Percy Butler will serve as the team captains this week.

“You can see when you announce somebody and they go crazy for somebody what they mean to them as teammates, and those three will do a great job,” Quinn said.

Luvu, who the team acquired during the offseason, established himself as one of the more exciting additions to the defense during training camp. His energy and ability to make plays at multiple spots on the field has earned his teammates’ respect, and started off his Washington career against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with five tackles.

“Some of the words I described for him were just relentless,” Quinn said. “The energy that he gives to our team, to the building is awesome.”

Biadasz, another free agent addition for the Commanders, has established himself as one of the clear leaders on the offensive line. Pro Football Focus ranked him 12th among centers with a pass block grade of 73.7 thanks to his zero allowed pressures on 37 pass block snaps.

“Tyler Biadasz, selfless problem solver at center, that’s a good thing and another big matchup for him inside, obviously last week, [New York Giants DL] Vita [Vea] and [New York Giants DL] Dexter [Lawrence II] this week,” Quinn said.

Butler, who stood out at times in training camp, was a primary special teams contributor against the Buccaneers, recording two solo tackles.

“Just a competitor and a fearless guy and our team loves this guy,” Quinn said.
