Cowboys sign former Jets pass rusher Carl Lawson after making trade with Giants

The Cowboys are continuing to bolster their defensive front ahead of the 2024 season.

Dallas is signing former Jets defensive end Carl Lawson, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The 29-year-old has 27 career sacks.

Lawson spent the past three seasons with the Jets and appeared in six games last year with no starts.

He played just 101 snaps and recorded zero sacks and five tackles.

The Jets signed Lawson to a three-year, $45 million deal before the 2021 season but he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon before he even played for the team.

That injury prevented Lawson from playing at the level he had shown during his time with the Bengals and he finished his Jets tenure with just seven sacks in 23 games, all coming in the 2022 season.

This signing came after Dallas acquired defensive tackle Jordan Phillips from the Giants on Wednesday, with the Cowboys sending the Giants a sixth-round pick for a seventh-round selection.

The Cowboys acted quickly to boost their defensive line after Sam Williams suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee last month, which put him on season-ending injured reserve.

As Dallas was active over the last 24 hours, it is still without All-Pro wideout CeeDee Lamb amid his contract holdout.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently caused a stir by saying the team did not have any urgency to agree to an extension with the star receiver but has since walked back those comments.

The Cowboys and Raiders will clash in a preseason game Saturday.
