Quarterback Daniel Jones’ contract extension has two years remaining after the 2024 season. Can the New York Giants get out of the deal?

In 2022, New York’s starting quarterback led the team to its first playoff win since Super Bowl 46. That offseason, Giants general manager Joe Schoen offered Jones a four-year deal that would keep him in New York through the 2026 season.

The 27-year-old played in six uneven games in 2023 before tearing his ACL. The Giants went 1-5 in those games, and Jones set a career-high in interception rate (3.8) in the limited sample size.

This year is a once-and-for-all, make-or-break season for Jones given the way the contract’s guaranteed money is structured.

In April 2022, the Giants declined Jones’ fifth-year option – essentially a one-year, $22.3 million deal – opting instead to let him prove himself in the final year of his four-year rookie contract.

The then-25-year-old led New York to a playoff appearance and a road win against the Vikings the following season.

That March, about a month and a half after the playoff win, the Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract with $82 million guaranteed. The deal also included incentives for playoff appearances, divisional titles and playoff wins, so long as Jones played at least 65% of snaps.

The contract also included a potential out for the team after two seasons if the Giants were unimpressed by the quarterback’s performance.

The $82 million in guarantees includes only Jones’ 2023 and 2024 salaries, as well as a prorated signing bonus. After the 2024 season, the quarterback’s cap hit drops from $69 million to $22 million – all of which is part of that prorated signing bonus and a payout for a 2023 contract restructure that gave the Giants more cap space that year.

Daniel Jones stats

In 2023, the first year of Jones’ new, four-year contract, the quarterback played in just six games before a torn ACL ended his season early.

In those six games, Jones was 108-of-160 on pass attempts for a career-high 67.5% completion rate. He threw for 909 yards but had two touchdown passes to six interceptions, giving him career lows in TD% (1.3) and Int% (3.8) in that limited sample.

Jones took 30 sacks in his six starts in 2023 and had a career-low 70.5 passer rating. He also rushed 40 times for 206 yards and one touchdown.

The Giants were 1-5 in his starts last year and finished 6-11 on the season.
