Daniel Jones makes feelings clear with instant decision on next NFL team
It didn’t take long for Daniel Jones to find a new home.
The quarterback has been the NFL‘s hottest topic in recent days, after his career with the New York Giants came to an abrupt end.
Last week, Jones was benched and released by the team that took him as the sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft, having struggled to spark any life into their offense this season.
The Giants were 2-8 when they dropped Jones, and Tommy DeVito has stepped into his starting spot.
DeVito failed to get much going against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, and they suffered their sixth-straight loss to fall to 2-9.
Recent times have been tough for Jones in New York, but the rest of the season could be a different story.
According to reports, the 27-year-old is planning to sign with the Minnesota Vikings practice squad.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport broke the news on Wednesday, suggesting the move is a ‘new beginning and opportunity for Jones with a chance to be the backup’.
By joining the Vikings, the quarterback has made his feelings clear, and after struggling in New York, is landing with a contender for the rest of the 2024 season.
Minnesota boast an impressive 9-2 record and look poised for a postseason run.
If they bring in a solid backup for Sam Darnold, who is also a former New York QB who has revitalised his career with the Vikings, there’s no telling just how far they will be able to go.
Jones was snapped up soon after becoming a free agent, having officially cleared waivers on Monday afternoon following his release from the Giants.
He wasn’t expected to be claimed, as any team doing so would be on the hook for $11.83 million left on his contract this season and would also take on a $23 million injury guarantee.
Instead, it’s the Giants who will foot the bill as he moves on to a new challenge.
While he has landed with the Vikings, Jones was linked to a number of other teams.
Rapoport suggested the San Francisco 49ers could have come calling depending on how serious Brock Purdy‘s shoulder injury is.
The Las Vegas Raiders were also said to be interested, viewing Jones as a stop-gap to finish out the season strong while auditioning to become a bridge QB beyond 2024.
There was also suggestion he could have been a backup for another contender such as the Baltimore Ravens or Buffalo Bills.
But it’s the Vikings that look set to land Jones, who left New York with a 2-8 record as a starter this season, having completed 63.3% of his passes for 2,070 yards.
He also threw eight touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Giants, with 265 yards and two TDs on the ground.
Overall, Jones left New York with a 22-44-1 record, 70 touchdown passes and 47 interceptions.
All eyes will now be on Minnesota to see if Danny Dimes can bounce back as the season rolls on.
