Davante Adams critiques officials for costly late-game blunder in Miami | Sporting News

The New York Jets lost to the Miami Dolphins in overtime after a late mistake prevented them from sealing the game in regulation.

The Jets took a 26-23 lead on 42-yard field goal from Anders Carlson in the final minute. The clocked was stopped at 00:56 when the ball was snapped because wide receiver Davante Adams went out of bounds on the previous third-down play.

Adams was supposed to remain in bounds to keep the clock rolling with no timeouts remaining for Miami. New York’s plan was to burn another 38 seconds by letting the play clock tick down toward zero and calling its final timeout to set up the go-ahead field goal attempt with roughly 00:18 remaining on the game clock.

If executed properly, the Jets would’ve been kicking off to the Dolphins with about 00:14 left. Instead, Miami received the kickoff with 00:52 remaining, and, thanks to a 45-yard return, which took eight seconds of game time, was eventually able to set up Jason Sanders for the tying field goal.

Even with the kickoff return to their own 46-yard line, the Dolphins would likely not have had enough time to successfully move into field goal range had they not been gifted the extra 35-38 seconds due to the blunder involving Adams.

“We had just gone on the field, told everybody we are now officially in four-minute mode, stay inbounds, burn the clock as best as possible,” said interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich following the 32-26 loss that officially eliminated the Jets (3-10) from postseason contention.

As Adams caught the ball in bounds near the sideline, Dolphins’ defensive back Kendall Fuller wrapped him up and appeared to stop the receiver’s forward progress before leading him out of play.

“They did a good job pushing him out,” said Ulbrich.

While the coach credited the opposing defense, Adams provided a different perspective. The All-Pro suggested the officials should have ended the play with him being stopped in bounds.

“Everybody in this huddle saw it. Caught it in bounds and they decided they were gonna take 25 seconds to blow it dead and ended up out of bounds,” said Adams while addressing reporters.

Adams finished the game with nine receptions for 109 yards and one touchdown.
