Detroit Lions vs. New York Giants Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 8-8-2024

The NFL continues its return with its second night of preseason games when the Detroit Lions take on the New York Giants. The teams are having joint practices leading up to this game, which resulted in a fight between the Lions’ offense and Giants’ defense on Monday. The Lions made it to the NFC Championship last season before falling to the 49ers, while the Giants missed the playoffs after finishing third in the NFC East. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 EST from MetLife Stadium, with the Giants currently listed as 3.5-point favorites.

Detroit Looks to Keep Building

The Detroit Lions look to grow upon one of their most successful seasons in the NFL, as they made a run to the NFC Championship game last year. They lost 34-31 in San Francisco, but return most of the major roster pieces from last year’s team. Detroit won the NFC North with a 12-5 record behind the strong play of quarterback Jared Goff and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. These teams met last season in the preseason in Detroit, with the Lions winning 21-16.

The Lions’ offense will once again be focused around Goff and St. Brown, with Jahmyr Gibbs gaining more experience in his second season in the league. Goff was 4th in the league in touchdown passes with 30 last season, and was second in passing yards with 4,575 on the year. Head coach Dan Campbell recently told the press that he does not expect Jared Goff to play in the preseason opener. Detroit returns two excellent running backs in veteran David Montgomery, and second-year player Gibbs, though Gibbs is expected to get more of the workload as he continues to enter his prime. Amon-Ra St. Brown was 3rd in the league in receiving yards last season, he will be joined again by Jameson Williams on the perimeter. Penei Sewell is back as one of the best offensive tackles in the league.

Defensively, the Lions will return Aidan Hutchinson as an elite pass rusher and have DJ Reader to plug up the middle. In this preseason game, the offense will rely on the play of backup quarterbacks Hendon Hooker and Nate Sudfeld. Hooker was SEC Offensive Player of the Year in 2022, and fell in the draft due to recent injuries. Sudfeld led Detroit to the preseason win last season over the Giants.

Giants First Showing After Hard Knocks

The New York Giants were featured on the preseason edition of Hard Knocks on HBO this season, and the reports are not looking positive. They were criticized for the handling of running back Saquon Barkley, and how they let him slip to the division-rival Philadelphia, and the coaching staff openly discussed the limitations and concerns around Daniel Jones to start the season at quarterback. The Giants finished third in the NFC East last season and picked up exciting receiver Malik Nabers in the draft out of LSU. They begin their rebuild this year, while sticking with Jones at the QB spot.

Daniel Jones missed action last year due to an injury, which led Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito to start games for the G-Men. Jones will make $35.5 million this season, clearly making him the starter and he will need to prove that he is worthy of the big contract. Barkley is out of the backfield, which leaves Devin Singletary as the lead back. Darren Waller just retired from the tight end position, so they will have to rely on Nabers to produce in his rookie season. They also have Wan’Dale Robinson and Darius Slayton at the wideout position.

On the other side of the ball, Dexter Lawrence is back in the middle to be a run blocker from the defensive tackle position. Bobby Okereke should be their best linebacker in the middle, with Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeau on the outside. Daniel Jones requested to play in the preseason, but it is more likely that Drew Locke and Tommy DeVito get the majority of the snaps. Locke still has hopes of being a starter in the league, and will look to make a strong impression here.

Neither starting quarterback is expected to figure into this matchup. The Lions already announced that Goff will not play, and the Giants have been quiet about the potential of Jones playing. In all likelihood, this will be a battle of the backup quarterbacks, with Detroit rolling with Hooker and Sudfeld, and New York going with Locke and DeVito. Drew Lock was drafted into the NFL to be a starting quarterback and still believes he can land a starting spot in the league. There were offseason rumors that Locke may be better for the offense than Daniel Jones, leaving the Giants with a difficult decision surrounding their 35-million-dollar quarterback. Locke will look to excel in this game, he will not be looking for check-downs to play it safe, he will want to air it out and make a statement in the first game of the preseason. Dan Campbell (3-6 SU) cares more about the regular season. Tommy DeVito excited New York with his play last season, and the Giants will be able to win this by more than a field goal.

Take the Giants to cover the spread.

Prediction: Giants -3.5

NFL preseason is a famous spot to take the over. It is perceived that most teams will not play their top players, resulting in lower-scoring games. Vegas knows this, and if betting the under was that easy, they would be losing money left and right. This game is going to go over the total. For every offensive star that is not playing, there is a defensive star who is resting as well. The defensive players in the league are not as well known as the quarterbacks, but they have a massive impact on the game. Each team will give up points on defense, as the backup quarterbacks in this game have hopes of starting in the league. Drew Locke could challenge for the starting spot in New York and is expected to get plenty of action in this one. Hendon Hooker will get time for the Lions, and he would have been drafted much higher if not for injury concerns, but he is healthy now.

Take the over.

Prediction: Over 35.5
