Devin Singletary’s non-touchdown: Giants RB upsets fantasy football managers with slide on one-yard line vs. Browns | Sporting News United Kingdom

Giants running back Devin Singletary made some enemies out of his fantasy football managers with a late-game decision against the Browns.

New York held a slim six-point lead over Cleveland late in the fourth quarter when a Browns turnover on downs put the Giants in the driver’s seat for a victory. All New York needed was one first down to secure its first win of the season.

Singletary only needed one play to pick up the necessary yardage to win the game, but his last-second choice to stop short of a touchdown left fantasy football players screaming at their television.

The Giants missed an opportunity to put the game out of reach when kicker Greg Joseph’s 48-yard field goal was off the mark with three minutes remaining in a six-point game.

New York’s defense came up with a necessary stop in four plays, turning the Browns over on downs to retain possession at Cleveland’s 44-yard line with 2:23 to play.

All the Giants needed was one first down to win the game and they got that — and a lot more — on the first play of the drive.

New York drew up a fake reverse to rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, instead working a quick toss to Singletary going the other way. Singletary had a heroic run, making a couple of cuts through traffic and shedding a few tackles to break free for a 43-yard run.

Singletary had a clear shot at the end zone to put the game away but instead decided to slide at the one-yard line, causing excruciating pain for his fantasy managers.

Why did Singletary fall down at the one? Because the Browns had no timeouts remaining. That decision ensured that all the Giants had to do was get into victory formation, take three QB kneels and run out the clock.

That is exactly what New York did, picking up its first win of the season with a 21-15 victory over Cleveland.

The frustration is warranted from fantasy managers, though.

If Singletary punched that in for another touchdown, it would have put the Giants ahead by at least 12 points with only two minutes remaining. It would have taken a miracle for the Browns to pull off a comeback win with no timeouts, but a chance was enough for Singletary to make the decision he did.
