Drew Lock will miss time with injury in new Giants’ quarterback worry
The Giants have yet another quarterback injury to manage.
Drew Lock, who exited Thursday’s preseason game in the first quarter, is expected to miss time but not undergo surgery, as first reported by NFL Network.
He reportedly is dealing with a bone contusion and a strained oblique.
Despite general manager Joe Schoen saying during the game broadcast that Lock could’ve returned to the game if needed, head coach Brian Daboll seemed to sense something bad was brewing even before meeting with head trainer Ronnie Barnes.
“It could be longer than a couple days,” Daboll said early Friday afternoon.
Daboll was “potentially” going to add a quarterback this week if Lock was sidelined.
The odds of that scenario probably increased after the diagnosis.
The Giants already are taking a cautious approach with starting quarterback Daniel Jones, who is coming off a season in which he suffered the second major neck injury of his career and a torn ACL.
Last year, the Giants had to turn to third-stringer Tommy DeVito when both Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor were injured, and now Jones’ backup again is headed to the shelf for an unknown amount of time.
The second-team snaps represent an opportunity for DeVito to get off the bubble and cement his place on the roster.
The Giants do not usually carry three quarterbacks on the active roster during the regular-season.
Former CFL star Nathan Rourke, who was with the Giants until July 28, signed with the Falcons, so scratch his name from the list of stopgaps who could take snaps in next Saturday’s game against the Texans.
