Eagles vs NY Giants score, live update: Saquon Barkley show gets rolling with 2 big runs

play

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. − It didn’t take long for Saquon Barkley to find out how he would be greeted in his return to MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

He was booed each time he touched the ball, even though Barkley said earlier in the week that he didn’t expect Giants fans to boo him. But many, including former Giants running back Tiki Barber, feel that Barkley betrayed them by signing with the Giants’ NFC East rivals, the Eagles.

And that was evident early on.

It took Barkley longer to get going on offense. He had just 17 yards rushing on his first 7 carries into the second quarter as the Eagles went a sixth straight game without scoring a first-quarter point this season.

But Barkley’s 55-yard run set up the Eagles’ first touchdown and A.J. Brown added a 41-yard TD on 4th-and-3 helping the Eagles to a 14-3 lead over the Giants, who got a field goal with 5 seconds left in the first half.

The Eagles’ defense, meanwhile, played well. They sacked Giants QB Daniel Jones 5 times in the first half, matching their high for a game set last week.

But the Eagles also have other concerns. They were already without left tackle Jordan Mailata, who was placed on injured reserve on Friday. They lost right guard Mekhi Becton to a concussion in the first quarter.

Cornerback Darius Slay was injured late in the first half.

And Jalen Hurts himself was sacked 4 times in the first half.

Hurts was 8-for-10 for 98 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Barkley had 75 yards rushing on 9 carries and 10 yards receiving.

“One of these days we’ll start fast,” Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said. “It’s something that we’ve put a lot of time and effort into, continuing to work and evolve and find our space there because it hasn’t happened. Simple as that.”

Sunday was not that day.

The Eagles already have 7 sacks through three quarters Sunday, one more than they had through their first four games of the season.

Jalen Carter and Nakobe Dean each have 2. Nolan Smith, Bryce Huff and Josh Sweat have the other 3.

Saquon Barkley’s second big run of the game, this one for 38 yards, set up the Eagles’ third touchdown, giving them a 21-3 lead with 7:03 left in the third quarter.

Barkley’s run came on a 1st-and-10 from the Eagles’ 49 down to the Giants’ 13. Jalen Hurts capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge. Barkley has 135 yards on 16 carries so far.

It took Saquon Barkley until the second quarter for him and the Eagles’ offense to get untracked. Barkley had just 17 yards on 7 carries before he broke free for a 55-yard run down to the Giants’ 19 early in the second quarter. Barkley then capped the drive with a 3-yard TD run, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 8:58 left in the second quarter.

A few minutes later, Hurts hit A.J. Brown from 41 yards out on 4th-and-3, giving the Eagles a 14-0 lead with 4:27 left.

The Eagles are ending another first quarter without scoring a single point. The Eagles were the only NFL team to go scoreless in the first quarter through five games. Now, it’s 6. And really, it’s at 8 going back to last season, the third longest in team history.

The Eagles didn’t come close this time. They crossed midfield on their last possession, getting to the Giants’ 48. But Barkley lined up in the wildcat formation lost 3 yards on second down, and Jalen Hurts was sacked on third down.

Tight end Dallas Goedert, who’s tied for the team lead in receptions with 24, is among the Eagles’ inactives against the Giants. But cornerback Darius Slay, who was listed as questionable, is playing. So is safety Sydney Brown, who was activated Saturday off the PUP list.

The Eagles’ other inactives are QB Tanner McKee, CB Eli Ricks, G/T Darian Kinnard, G Trevor Keegan and DT Byron Young.

Eagles activate Sydney Brown off PUP list

The Eagles activated Sydney Brown off the physically unable to perform list. Brown is possibly making his 2024 debut on the same MetLife Stadium field where his 2023 season. Brown tore his ACL that day. The Eagles had a roster spot opened after LT Jordan Mailata went on IR with a hamstring injury.

The Eagles also gave the practice-squad elevation to OL Jack Driscoll. It’s his second of three allowed elevations.

Eagles vs Giants prediction

There are two things that could derail an Eagles victory: The Giants’ defensive line, and Nabers tearing up the Eagles’ secondary. The Barkley factor overrides all of that. This will be the game the Eagles break their first-quarter scoring drought, and by the end, Barkley will wear down Dexter Lawrence and the Giants D-line.

The pick: Eagles 29, Giants 16
