Ex-NFL GM believes ‘train wreck’ could be coming if the Giants experience slow start

Last season, the New York Giants were blown out by the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 40-0 on their home turf. That game would set the tone for the remainder of the season, as the team finished 6-11 after going 2-8 through Week 10.

Recently, Jeff Diamond, the former GM of the Minnesota Vikings, said that the 2024 season could become a “train wreck” for the Giants if they experience another slow start.

“There are a lot of moving parts that are going on with the Giants right now and especially going into the season and a lot of pressure on [Daniel] Jones, on Brian Daboll, on Joe Schoen,” said Diamond on the Valentine’s Views podcast. “I think it’s a potential train wreck coming if they don’t get off to a good start this year and if they’re not competitive in a pretty tough NFC East.”

Aside from the 2022 season in which the Giants made the playoffs, every season has felt like a train wreck in the Daniel Jones era. Entering his sixth NFL season, it is now or never for the Giants QB to figure it out.

Diamond believes the Giants are capable of avoiding a messy season

Despite his gloomy prediction, Diamond believes the Giants can avoid a disastrous 2024 season, citing the talent the team boasts on the roster.

“I think there’s a lot of really good players on that roster,” said Diamond. “That NFC East is a really interesting division, but I think that the Giants if Jones is playing well, if [Malik] Nabors comes on, if the defense gels, and most important if that offensive line can play better then I think they’ve got a chance.”

With the start of the regular season inching closer, time will tell if the Giants can prove Diamond’s assertion of avoiding the annual train wreck that has haunted the team for the last several years.
