Former Kansas basketball standout inks two-way deal for first NBA contract

It took a while for a Kansas basketball player to be selected in the 2024 NBA Draft, but two former Jayhawks heard their names called during the second round. One of those was Kevin McCullar, who was taken No. 56 overall by the Denver Nuggets before promptly being traded to the New York Knicks. Lauded for his defensive ability and leadership on the court, he was tabbed a draft-day steal by many outlets.

McCullar had gone over a month without signing a contract since the draft. It was beginning to look concerning because he could not participate in the Summer League due to the knee injury that held him out of the NCAA Tournament earlier this year. However, the former Jayhawk finally secured his bag and agreed to a two-way contract with the Knicks yesterday.

The exact details of the contract are unknown, but it is official that the Knicks will keep McCullar and give him a chance. As per league rules, McCullar can spend up to 45 days with the franchise’s NBA team before they must give him a guaranteed NBA contract. This is why he will spend most of his team in Westchester with the G League affiliate.

McCullar had a breakout season at Kansas in 2023-24, leading the Big 12 in scoring with 18.3 points per game while averaging 6.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists. He was considered one of the best on-ball defenders in this draft class heading into June, but his recurring knee injury hurt his stock.

It is very unlikely that the 23-year-old sees much playing time during his rookie year sitting behind star wings Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby. However, he will gain some valuable experience that he can use as his NBA career progresses.
