Game status | Frankie Luvu active for Sunday vs. Giants, Brian Robinson questionable
Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu is expected to play in Sunday’s division matchup against the New York Giants, coach Dan Quinn confirmed in his Friday press conference.
Luvu missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday with a shin injury. He did practice on Friday and was limited in the Commanders’ walkthrough.
Luvu has become one of the Commanders’ main sources of energy, confidence and support since he was signed as a free agent in March, with Quinn saying that the linebacker has “been a really big lift for our team.” Luvu has been one of the defense’s most productive defensive players as well. He’s second on the team with 49 tackles with four sacks, a pass breakup, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
Luvu has also developed a strong bond with fellow linebacker Bobby Wagner since the two became teammates. Wagner’s experience has blended well with Luvu’s energy, with Quinn adding that “It’s a little bit of the yin and yang with Bobby and him.”
“Bobby Wagner’s as cool as you can get in just about every scenario, and then next to him is Frankie, who is wound up as wild and fun as you can get,” Quinn said. “So, it’s nice to have the balance of both of them doing their thing.”
Brian Robinson Jr. (hamstring) was limited throughout the week and will be questionable to play against the Giants. Robinson had 133 yards on 17 carries in Week 2, including a 40-yard run. As a key part of Washington’s offense, Robinson has already hit a career-high with six rushing touchdowns to go with 461 rushing yards. If Robinson cannot play, the Commanders will need to rely on Jeremy McNichols and Austin Ekeler to create a stable rushing attack.
The Commanders will be without one of their key offensive linemen on Sunday, as tackle Cornelius Lucas has been ruled out with an ankle injury. However, the Commanders do have the benefit of regaining rookie tackle Brandon Coleman, who missed last week’s game while in the concussion protocol. Lucas and Coleman had split reps for most of the year, but with Coleman back, it’s the first time the rookie will get all of the snaps at left tackle.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels was also listed on the injury report with his rib injury but didn’t express any doubt that he would play against the Giants. After missing most of practice last week with the same injury, Daniels threw for a career-high 326 yards on 21 completions.
The remaining players on Washington’s injury report, including Clelin Ferrell (knee), Olamide Zaccheaus (hamstring) and Terry McLaurin (ankle), will all be available for Sunday’s game.
