Giants ‘Hard Knocks’ glossed over team’s most controversial offseason storyline | Sporting News
There are many storylines that “Hard Knocks” will attempt to cover with the New York Giants, but the most controversial offseason storyline was completely glossed over in the debut episode.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the Giants have the final say in the edits for all of the episodes, but there was barely a mention of the fiery exit from former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.
As Dan Duggan of The Athletic put it, Martindale’s head-turning exit “was reduced to a montage of news reports.”
While Hard Knocks gives some unprecedented access that most fans never get to see during the offseason, it wasn’t expected that there would be much about this storyline during the series.
However, there was barely a mention of any of it.
After Daboll informed Martindale at the beginning of the offseason that the Giants were going to fire outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins and his younger brother Kevin, a defensive assistant, Martindale reportedly exploded.
According to a report from Paul Schwartz of The Post, Martindale “cursed out Daboll, said his piece, got up, slammed the door and walked out of the building.”
Again, this was never expected to be a big part of Hard Knocks, but there was a sliver of hope that something would have been said about it.
Instead, the focus of the debut episode was mostly on the departure of Saquon Barkley and a little insight into new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen meeting with the front office and scouting department.
