Giants LB Dyontae Johnson considered week-to-week with ankle sprain

Giants LB Dyontae Johnson is being considered week-to-week with an ankle sprain he suffered during Thursday’s preseason opener against the Detroit Lions, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.

Johnson had been generating a ton of positive buzz with his standout performance during training camp and over the first few quarters Thursday before leaving with injury.

The undrafted free agent out of Toledo was good in the run game as he generated two tackles for a loss to go along with two pressures and one New York’s two sacks on the night.

“I’m very pleased with him,” DC Shane Bowen said this week. “I think he’s fighting for a role, and I tell those guys that special teams plays a vital part of that, but defensively he’s done a really good job of stepping in there and being productive for us.”

Johnson spent last season on New York’s practice squad but he seemed to have had a legitimate chance of cracking the roster as the backup to starting linebacker Bobby Okereke.

This injury seems to throw a bit of a wrench in those plans, but opens up an opportunity for rookie linebacker Darius Massau, who also put together a strong game on Thursday.
