Giants-Lions final score: New York defeats Detroit, 14-3

The New York Giants defeated the Detroit Lions 14-3 in their 2024 NFL preseason opener on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium.

All the points in this game came during the first half, as the Giants had two stops on fourth and goal to keep the Lions from finding the end zone.

Drew Lock suffers injury

It was a rough outing for Drew Lock in his Giants debut, as the veteran quarterback was forced to leave the game due to injury.

After being sacked while looking to scramble, Lock landed awkwardly on the turf as it looked like he was favoring his left side. Before leaving the game, Lock went 4 of 10 for 17 yards and an interception.

Fortunately, Joe Schoen confirmed in an interview during the television broadcast that Lock is “OK,” and could have returned to the game.

Nabers and Hyatt play, but …

The Giants elected to play both Malik Nabers and Jalin Hyatt, but both were essentially non-factors in their quarter of action.

Nabers, the Giants’ first-round pick, was not targeted, although there were a few occasions where he was open and could’ve made a play. Hyatt recorded one reception that didn’t result in any yardage.

A strong day for Eric Gray

Eric Gray put together a strong overall performance as he battles for a spot on the Giants 53-man roster.

On the ground, Gray had four carries for 52 yards and two touchdowns. He first found the end zone on a 48-yard run and followed it with a 1-yard score a little later on in the second quarter.

He also made an impact in the passing game, as he hauled in 4 passes for 46 yards.

More stats

Relieving the injured Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito saw plenty of game action. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 92 yards, as he made some timely throws during the Giants’ two touchdown drives.

Dante Miller saw a good amount of action in the second half, as he had 12 carries for 63 yards.

Darrian Beavers led the Giants defense with 5 tackles (3 solo), including a tackle for loss.

Who did not play?

The first preseason game is typically one that features plenty of backups.

With the rainy conditions in the New Jersey area, both teams were very selective with which players took the field.

To no surprise, Daniel Jones, Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux did not play.

Here’s a list of some notable players who did not play:

Offense: Daniel Jones, Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, and the entire starting offensive line (except for Aaron Stinnie).

Defense: Dexter Lawrence, Rakeem Nunez-Roches, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Bobby Okereke, Micah McFadden and Jason Pinnock.
