Giants Running a Costly Risk by Sticking with QB Daniel Jones | SI.com

Per Over the Cap, the Giants have $48.153 million in total space and $30.382 million in effective space (effective space being what they have left after signing 51 players and their projected rookie class, as per the Top 51 rule). That cap space currently ranks 19th in the league.

Cutting a healthy Jones before March 15, when $12 million of his base salary becomes guaranteed, will result in $19.395 million in savings and $22.210 million in dead money. But if the Giants are on the hook for the injury guarantee, add the $23 million to the dead money, and suddenly, the Giants will be in the red, unable to find money to operate next offseason and beyond.

Quarterback Daniel Jones has five completions on passes that have traveled 20-plus yards in the air this season, which is 25th-most in the league. His 22.7 completion percentage (5-of-22) on passes over 20 yards also ranks 25th. Jones is attempting 20-plus yard passes on 9.2 percent of his attempts, which ranks 21st.

There is no evidence Jones can deliver the explosive plays Brian Daboll has identified as essential. In fact, there’s a mountain of evidence to the contrary. Since throwing deep on 11.8% of his passes as a rookie in 2019, Jones’ aggression has been in steady decline: 8.9% in 2020, 7.5 percent in 2021, 5.9% in 2022 and 6.9% in 2023.

Brian Daboll, New York Giants: WARM. In his first year calling the shots, Daboll propelled the Giants to their first playoff appearance in six years. But in the two seasons since, things have gone horribly awry — and 2024 hasn’t been very encouraging. Daboll, heralded as an offensive mastermind, has called plays for a unit that ranks 25th in EPA per play. The team’s offensive ineptitude has been on full display in the last two weeks, sinking a defense that’s played well at times and generated pressure. This season seemed likely to be a fork in the road for the franchise, and it’s growing harder to believe that Daboll (or Jones) has done enough to warrant another look next year.

How does this loss reflect on GM Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll after Barkley’s departure? Considering owner John Mara said he would have a hard time sleeping if Barkley went to the Eagles in free agency, this might have him up for weeks. Mara and Giants fans had to watch Barkley return to MetLife Stadium and compile 176 yards rushing and a touchdown. This is exactly what Daboll and Schoen needed to avoid. This reflects poorly on their regime, which results suggest isn’t much improved in Year 3. They need to make sure this season doesn’t completely go off the tracks.

Saquon Barkley destroying the Giants on Sunday in his return to MetLife Stadium perhaps overshadowed the bigger picture: This was yet another loss for the third-year Brian Daboll/Joe Schoen regime to their team’s two biggest NFC East rivals — the Eagles and Cowboys. It felt like so many brutal results that have come before — both during and prior to this regime.

New York Giants: Sellers. But in trying to “create a spark,” Brian Daboll has nonetheless created quarterback uncertainty despite committing to Jones going forward. So yeah, this team doesn’t seem playoff bound, especially with a primetime date at Pittsburgh next Monday. If the Giants want to acquire assets to move forward this offseason, one candidate would be wide receiver Darius Slayton who has proven to be a relatively reliable veteran.

4. CB Andru Phillips, New York Giants PFF Grade: 83.3. Phillips has been consistently good since arriving in the NFL as a third-round draft pick out of Kentucky. This past week, he allowed just one reception for -2 yards. Through six games, he has registered 13 defensive stops.

6. WR Malik Nabers, New York Giants PFF Grade: 80.3. Nabers returned to the lineup for the Giants this week, and while he wasn’t as dominant as in previous games, he remained productive. He has averaged 2.25 yards per route run this season, 13th among qualifying receivers.

14. S Tyler Nubin, New York Giants PFF Grade: 71.2. Nubin is coming off the best game of his career to date, earning a 76.5 overall PFF grade in the Giants’ loss to the Eagles. He allowed just one reception for five yards from 22 snaps in coverage, and has been a really solid tackler so far this season, missing just 4.2% of the tackles he has attempted.

Dexter Lawrence has an opportunity this season to join a very exclusive club. The Giants’ two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman leads the NFL with a career-high 9.0 sacks through the season’s first seven weeks. That is the highest total by a Giants player in the first seven games since Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan had 12.5 in 2001 (when he set the NFL record, since tied, with 22.5 sacks). The only other player to exceed Lawrence’s total in seven games is Leonard Marshall, who had 11.5 sacks in 1985, when the Giants set a team record with 68. Marshall finished with 15.5 sacks.
