Giants’ roster move: DB Jalen Mills released
The New York Giants released defensive back Jalen Mills from the Non-Football Injury list Thursday morning, per a report from Adam Schefter. Mills had previously suffered a calf injury.
The Giants originally signed Mills, 30, on March 12th to reinforce their secondary before the 2024 NFL Draft.
Mills was selected out of LSU in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent the first five years of his career with the Eagles before playing for the New England Patriots from 2021 through 2023.
Mills was regarded as an established veteran presence in a very young secondary that will largely be relying on players with three, or fewer, years of experience.
The Giants quietly expressed concerns regarding their secondary throughout the offseason. They also released cornerback Aaron Robinson earlier in camp. It remains to be seen if the Giants will add another cornerback, or if camp and preseason has given them confidence in their young secondary.
The Giants added a pair of safeties — Jonathan Sutherland and Raheem Layne — to the roster on Wednesday. With Mills, Gervarrius Owens and Elijah Riley not practicing, they were thin at the safety spot.
The release of Mills and the trade of defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday night removed a pair of experienced defenders from the 90-man roster.
