Giants sign guard Greg Van Roten

The New York Giants have signed veteran guard Greg Van Roten.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirmed the signing in his remarks before Tuesday’s practice. Daboll likewise refused to rule out the possibility of moving Jon Runyan Jr. from right guard to left guard after the addition of Van Roten. Runyan Jr. has spent all of the Giants’ offseason program at right guard, however Van Roten is a career right guard as well.

We’ll see where Van Roten slots in along the Giants’ offensive interior, but more depth and competition are always good.

Van Roten, 34, visited the Giants at the start of camp, but left without a contract. Since then, the Giants have had to dip into their depth chart while dealing with injuries to right tackle Evan Neal and center John Michael Schmitz. Van Roten is a true journeyman, having spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Toronto Argonauts befor playing with the Las Vegas Raiders last year

Van Roten played well for the Raiders last year (despite giving up 5 sacks), and started all 17 games at right guard. He also has experience playing center, which could be useful as there have been several poor snaps from backup center Austin Schlottman.

The Giants have also released cornerback Aaron Robinson in a corresponding roster move. Robinson was drafted by the Giants out of UCF in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. However, he has struggled with injury throughout his career. He played 271 defensive snaps as a rookie, but just 72 in 2022 and none in 2023.
