The New York Giants will be without one of their surprise standout players from training camp due to an ankle sprain.
During the team’s preseason opener against the Detroit Lions on Thursday, linebacker Dyontae Johnson suffered an ankle sprain and is considered week-to-week with the injury.
Johnson has been one of the standouts since the start of training camp. The second-year undrafted free agent out of Toledo has received first-team reps in place of Micah McFadden, who is working his way back from a spring hamstring injury.
Johnson came through with a big performance in the preseason opener against the Lions, registering four tackles (two solo), 1.0 sack and two tackles for loss — he was one of the studs from the game.
Preseason injuries are always tough, especially for depth players like Johnson. He was on his way to carving out a massive role in the linebacker room as the No. 3 behind McFadden and Bobby Okereke.
Now, he’s likely going to miss out on valuable reps in the next three weeks leading up to the season.
In his absence, the Giants will lean on rookie Darius Muasau, Matthew Adams, Carter Coughlin and Darrian Beavers in the linebacker competition.
