Giants vs. Steelers Betting Preview

New York Giants Betting News, Analysis

The Giants have been more competitive than their 2-5 record says they have been. In addition to notching road wins over Cleveland and Seattle, N.Y. also has three close losses: 21-18 vs. Washington, 20-15 vs. Dallas and 17-7 vs. Cincinnati (against the Bengals, the Giants were down just 10-7 before a late TD run made it a 10-point win for Cincinnati).

The last two weeks, however, were not pretty, even for a team that was 2-3 through five games. The Giants defense played well in the loss to the Bengals, but the offense scored just seven points, and QB Daniel Jones and Co. hit a new low against Philadelphia last week, with just 119 yards of total offense.

Jones was sacked seven times in that loss, and his performance (14-of-21 passing for 99 yards, 0 TDs and 0 interceptions) through three quarters was so bad that backup Drew Lock came in for the fourth quarter.

Despite Jones’ struggles, Giants coach Brian Daboll said this week that a quarterback change is not imminent.

Pittsburgh Steelers Betting News, Analysis

Speaking of quarterback changes, the Steelers turned heads before their Week 7 battle with the Jets. Mike Tomlin made the switch from a healthy Justin Fields to Russell Wilson despite a 4-2 start by his team. Through six games, Fields had made up for his underwhelming play as a passer by leading his team in both yards per carry and rushing touchdowns.

But for one Sunday at least, the Wilson move paid off, as the Steelers recovered from a slow start on offense to hang 37 points on the Jets. Wilson, who turns 36 in November, made several big throws, including completions of 44 and 37 to George Pickens. Another Wilson pass to Pickens fell incomplete but drew a 29-yard pass interference penalty on Sauce Gardner.

The Steelers also finished the 37-15 win over the Jets with 149 yards rushing on 36 carries in their second-best game of the season by that measure.

Giants vs. Steelers Prediction, Best Bets

With Pittsburgh — which has been outstanding on defense all season — coming off its best offensive performance of the year, the Steelers should cruise in this matchup, at least on paper.

After the Giants allowed seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss to the Eagles following a season-ending Lisfranc injury to star left tackle Andrew Thomas in Week 6, can Jones and star rookie Malik Nabers bounce back tonight in the Steel City?

We don’t see that happening against a stout front seven that should be able to consistently put Jones and the Giants offense in third-and-long. The Steelers have been better up front than in the secondary this year, but against a Giants OL that is sorely missing Thomas, T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith the Pitt pass rush could have a massive night.

Another key in this game will be the turnover battle. Pittsburgh is third in the league in turnover margin at +9, with 13 takeaways and just four TOs. The Giants, on the other hand, are -2 on the season, with eight TOs and a measly six takeaways, including just one interception by their defense.

The Steelers needed a second-quarter pick to spark them against the Jets, as they trailed 15-6 just before halftime, but the second half last Sunday night was all Pittsburgh.

Another competitive, low-scoring first half wouldn’t surprise us tonight, but we expect the Steelers to pull away at some point while making life miserable for Jones from start to finish.

We’ll take the home team not only on the spread, but to win big with a small alt spread play. We also recommend taking the under on an alt team total on the Giants, who are:

  • second-worst in the league in scoring at just 14.1 points per game
  • coming off one of the worst games of Jones’ career
  • facing an excellent Steelers DL in a hostile atmosphere without their best O-lineman

Giants vs. Steelers Best Bets

  • Steelers -5.5 (-110 at FanDuel) 1 unit
  • Steelers alt spread -9.5 (+152 at FD) 0.5 units
  • Giants Team Total Under 10.5 (+180 at DraftKings) 0.5 units
