Girl’s golf: Smith and Trapani finish in top four of New York State Junior Championship

FAYETTEVILLE, N.Y. — Katlynn Smith of Saugerties High and Marlboro’s Alexa Trapani finished in the top four on Friday in the New York State Golf Association’s Girls Junior Amateur Championship at Green Lakes State Park Golf Course.

Smith, a member of Rip Van Winkle Country Club in Palenville, finished second at 6-over-par 148 following rounds of 71 and 77.

Trapani, who won this year’s Ulster County Women’s Golf Association Championship, took fourth place in the junior event for girls 14 years of age and younger with a 36-hole total of 153. She had rounds of 78 and 75.

Smith was the leader after Thursday’s first round with an even-par 71.

Natalie Wasik (73-68-141) of Lockport Town and Country Club, was 5-under in her last 12 holes of Friday’s final round to pass Smith and finished with a seven-stroke win.

The 14-year-old Smith, who has transferred to Saugerties High this year, finished fifth in the New York State Women’s Amateur Championship at Skaneateles Country Club in mid-July.
