Golf: Donte Groppuso leads three local players after first round of New York State Open

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Former Kingston High star and two-time Ulster County Men’s Amateur Golf Championship (The Herdegen) winner Donte Groppuso fired an even-par 71 on Tuesday, July 23, to lead a trio of local golfers competing in the 54-hole New York State Open at Bethpage State Park’s famed Black Course.

Kingston High golf coach Juan Weissenberg, who is representing Mohonk Golf Course, had a 1-over 72. Woodstock Golf Club head pro Chris Sanger rounded out the local competitors with a 3-over 74.

A cut will be made to the low 60 scorers and ties and anyone within 10 strokes of the lead following Wednesday’s second round. The final round will take place Thursday.

Groppuso was scheduled to tee off at 8:54 a.m. in Wednesday’s second round, while Weissenberg was scheduled to tee off at 9:16 a.m. and Sanger at 12:37 p.m.

Groppuso was in a tie for 15th following the first round.

Josh Goldenberg of the Atlantic Golf Club on Long Island was leading the 144-player field of amateurs and professionals with a 4-under 67. His round was highlighted by six birdies, with three on the front and three on the back.

Bethpage Black has hosted U.S. Opens in 2002 and 2009, the PGA Championship in 2019 and will be the site for the 2025 Ryder Cup.
