Golf: Donte Groppuso top local finisher at New York State Open

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Kingston High graduate and two-time Ulster County Men’s Amateur Golf Championship (The Herdegen) winner Donte Groppuso tied for 18th for the best local finish in Thursday’s New York State Open at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course.

Groppuso shot a 6-over-par 77 on Thursday to complete the 54-hole tournament at 4-over 217.

Kingston High golf coach Juan Weissenberg, who plays out of the Mohonk Golf Course in New Paltz, finished in a tie for 31st at 7-over 220 following a final-round 73.

Woodstock Golf Club head pro Chris Sanger finished in a tie for 44th at 9-over 222 after a final-round 73.

The winner was Peter Ballo of the Connecticut Golf Club, who finished at 10-under 203.
