Golf: Three locals to tee it up July 9 in New York State Men’s Amateur

HAMBURG, N.Y. — Newly crowned Ulster County Men’s Amateur Golf Championship (The Herdegen) winner Ben Fox is among three local players competing in the 101st New York State Men’s Amateur Championship that begins Tuesday, July 9, at the Wanakah Country Club in Hamburg.

More than 150 of New York State’s top male amateurs will compete in the tournament that features 72 holes of stroke-play competition. There is a cut to the low 40 players and ties following Wednesday’s second round. Thursday’s championship will conclude with 36 more holes.

Joining Fox in the state tournament is two-time Herdegen champion (2022, 2023) Donte Groppuso of Florida Southern College and former Kingston High golf star Vlad Olenski. Groppuso is also a Kingston High grad.

Fox, a Saugerties High grad and St. John Fisher University golfer, will tee off at 1:40 p.m. on the 10th hole in Tuesday’s opening round.

Groppuso is scheduled to tee off at 8:10 a.m. on the first tee. Olenski will tee off at 7:40 a.m. on the 10th tee.
