During Hunger Action Month, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the launch of a $10 million Food Access Expansion Grant Program to boost food availability in underserved areas across New York. The initiative will provide infrastructure funding to support the development and expansion of supermarkets, food cooperatives, farm stands, and other food retail stores in regions lacking access to affordable, healthy food. The program will also enhance markets for New York farmers.
“The Food Access Expansion Grant Program will support critical projects that will help us offer healthy, affordable food for our families,” said Governor Hochul. “This program will provide resources to upgrade food stores and farm stands, allowing them to prepare and sell locally sourced food while supporting our farmers.”
Eligible projects include starting or improving retail food stores, constructing commercial kitchens, and expanding food storage and mobile markets. Nonprofits, local governments, and tribal entities are eligible for grants ranging from $250,000 to $3 million. The application period is open until November 22, 2024.
This program builds on New York’s efforts to strengthen the food supply chain and address food insecurity, including programs like Nourish NY and Farm-to-School initiatives.
