A New York City hostel has found itself at the center of attention after being linked to the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Online evaluations of the HI New York City Hostel on the Upper West Side exploded after images of the suspect grinning while speaking with a receptionist were made public. Some of the remarks accused the hostel’s personnel of working with police authorities.
Images of the unmasked suspect, who seemed to be flirting with the receptionist, were published by the police just before the crime. According to sources, the killer gave a phony ID from New Jersey, paid for a room in cash, and took off his face mask at the receptionist’s request. Later, he killed Thompson in front of the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
Online evaluations of the hostel were rife with conflicting opinions, with some guests accusing the staff of aiding the police. In a one-star review, a customer referred to the staff as “narcs” for their involvement in giving police information. “Snitches get…one-star reviews. Since snitches aren’t covered by my health insurance anymore,” the reviewer wrote.
However, some critics appeared to make fun of the circumstance. A five-star review mockingly connected the hostel to the murder while praising it for accepting a phony ID. “RIP CEO of insurance company. This hotel has KILLER service! Fake IDs accepted!” the reviewer quipped. Additionally, the remark made fun of the hostel’s location by pointing out how close it was to medical conferences.
The administration of the hostel openly addressed the problem as the inquiry progressed. Hostelling International USA’s vice president, Danielle Brumfitt, attested to the hostel’s complete cooperation with the NYPD. “We are fully cooperating with the NYPD and, as this is an active investigation, cannot comment at this time,” Brumfitt stated.
By Friday, the hostel had put a warning alerting visitors to local law enforcement activities. According to the flier, on December 4, 2024, an event happened in Midtown, many miles from the hostel, and local police were looking into it. The staff’s complete cooperation with the current inquiry was highlighted in the message.
