Hofstra Students Shine at Sports Medicine Conference | News | Hofstra University, New York
Two students from Hofstra’s School of Health Sciences earned top honors at the Greater New York American College of Sports Medicine (GNY ACSM) Conference held at NYU Langone in New York City. The conference showcased research from undergraduate and graduate students across the region, featuring 29 accepted abstracts and six finalists in the prestigious President’s Cup Student Research Competition.
Hofstra alumna Jessie Hirsch from Bellerose, NY (Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology, May 2024), currently a student in Hofstra’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, won first place for her presentation on research conducted in collaboration with faculty and peers at NYIT. Julia Catanzano from Deer Park, NY, a senior in the BS in Exercise Physiology program, earned third place for her research on Hofstra student-athletes.
“Jessie and Julia’s achievements highlight the excellence of the exercise physiology program and the dedication of our students and faculty to advancing the field,” said Katie Sell, professor of exercise physiology. “The ability to conduct, present, and compete with their research at such a high level is a testament to their hard work. I am incredibly proud and look forward to seeing their continued growth and contributions to the field.”
Hirsch will represent the regional chapter at the ACSM National Conference in Georgia in May 2025. “I had an amazing time presenting my research at the GNY ACSM President’s Cup and was honored to be chosen. I am grateful to have the experience of presenting and representing Hofstra University. I’m extremely thankful to all the faculty at Hofstra who have helped me learn both as an undergraduate and graduate student and for all the opportunities I have received along the way,” Hirsch shared.
The President’s Cup required participants to present their research in a large auditorium before an audience of students, faculty, and judges, who also posed challenging questions. Hirsch’s and Catanzano’s outstanding performances reflect Hofstra’s commitment to fostering research and professional development.
“Competing at the President’s Cup during the ACSM Conference was an incredible experience. Placing was an honor and a reflection of the skills I’ve developed throughout my time at Hofstra. I’m especially grateful for the support and mentorship I received from Dr. Sell and the exercise physiology faculty, who encouraged me to take ownership of my work. This was an unforgettable experience that strengthened my confidence and understanding of the research process,” Catanzano said.
Hirsch’s and Catanzano’s accomplishments highlight the exceptional caliber of Hofstra’s School of Health Sciences and the University’s dedication to fostering research excellence, professional growth, and impactful student experiences that prepare graduates to excel in their fields – in alignment with the Hofstra 100 strategic plan.
