Many experts bashed ICC after an extremely low scoring match between Sri Lanka and South Africa in the T20 World Cup where only 157 runs were scored with an over rate of 4.4 runs per over.

New York: A quite bizarre match between Sri Lanka and South Africa sparked criticism for the ICC from many veteran cricketers and experts. Only 157 runs were scored at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium pitch located in New York in the group stage match between Sri Lanka and South Africa. The Proteas bowled out Sri Lanka for only 77 runs which is not only Sri Lanka’s lowest total in T20 World Cup history but also their lowest total in T20I history. The Sri Lankan batsmen were only able to score a total of 6 boundaries throughout their innings.

Anrich Nortje was by far the best bowler for the Proteas taking 4 wickets and giving away only 7 runs in his quota of 4 overs. He bowled the most economical spell in the history of the men’s T20 World Cup and was crucial to South Africa’s incredible bowling performance. Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj also took 2 wickets each and stayed economical throughout their respective spells.

Batsmen from both sides struggled to score on the New York track which also showed signs of uneven bounce. But the South Africans managed to start their T20 World Cup campaign with a 6-wicket victory thanks to important cameos from Quinton De Kock and Heinrich Klassen.

Former Indian cricketer, Irphan Pathan described the pitch as “not ideal” while South Africa’s performance coach, Prasanna Agoram labelled it as “terrible”. Additionally, the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium was also criticized for their poor outfield by former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary.

The venue will be hosting 7 more matches through the course of the World Cup, including 3 of Team India with the next one being against Ireland on Wednesday.
