ICC to look into the pitches in New York in this T20 World Cup | ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024

None of the two matches at the venue thus far has seen a three-figure total as yet

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has accepted that the pitches used in the first two matches of the 2024 T20 World Cup at the Nassau County International Stadium have been underpar.

In the two matches played thus far, the average run rate has been 5.5. Sri Lanka (against South Africa) and Ireland (against India) batted first and both teams were bowled out under the 100-run mark.

In a statement on Thursday (June 6), an ICC official said: “The pitches used so far at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted.

“The world-class grounds team have been working hard since the conclusion of yesterday’s game to remedy the situation and deliver the best possible surfaces for the remaining matches.”

The stadium based in New York is a modular cricket stadium with several drop-in pitches transported from Adelaide. The India-Ireland game specifically brought the conditions under heavy criticism. However, the Ireland batting coach Gary Wilson said the Irish camp was not concerned about the safety of their batters while playing the Indian bowlers. However, the ball swung and seamed prodigiously with an extensive bounce of a good length, making it next-to-impossible for the batters to score runs.

Both games in New York have been played on the same pitch. Pitch number two and three are yet to be brought into the action. The venue is scheduled to host six more group games in this competition, including the much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash on June 9.
