Jets’ GM hints first-round draft pick prepared to stifle bust whispers | Sporting News
The New York Jets‘ trade for Aaron Rodgers forced the team to drop two spots in the Round 1 order at the 2023 NFL Draft.
With speculation suggesting that the Jets were eyeing offensive tackle Broderick Jones, who went to the Pittsburgh Steelers one selection before New York hit the clock, general manager Joe Douglas and Co. used the No. 15 overall pick on Iowa State edge rusher Will McDonald.
As a rookie, McDonald played fewer than 20 percent of Gang Green’s defensive snaps. Over 15 games, the quick, but slender defensive end totaled 14 tackles and 3.0 sacks. With team brass encouraging McDonald to increase his body mass during the offseason, the hope is that the first-round draft pick can substantially boost his production in Year 2.
Third-year edge rusher Jermaine Johnson has essentially developed a blueprint for McDonald to follow. After being selected at No. 26 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Johnson made 2.5 sacks over 14 appearances as a rookie. He added noticeable bulk and strength during his first professional offseason, and the on-field results followed. Johnson more than doubled his snap count and tripled his sack output in 2023.
“You’d love to see Will take that step that Jermaine took last year,” said Douglas after setting the Jets’ initial 53-man roster last week. “Each person is different in their development, but I think we’ve seen a lot of positive practices, and positive ascension from Will.”
With offseason acquisition Haason Reddick locked in a contract dispute, the Jets need an interim starter opposite Johnson and McDonald may prove to be that guy.
“I think Will’s had a superb camp, and I think Will’s come in on a mission. His skills are undeniable, and I feel like he can really bring some elite athleticism off the edge, his change of direction, and his speed off the ball, his counter, and he’s one of those guys that constantly working to improve every day,” said Douglas.
New York started McDonald at defensive end for its first two preseason games. He totaled 28 defensive snaps and 1.0 sack before earning the night off in the exhibition finale against the New York Giants.
