Jets’ offensive coordinator explains what makes Breece Hall rare breed | Sporting News
It’s a term rarely heard in today’s NFL, but New York Jets‘ offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and running back Breece Hall both mentioned it this week ahead of Monday’s season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
After a successful sophomore season coming off ACL surgery, Hall has established himself as one of the league’s most dynamic ball carriers. More importantly, for the Jets, the RB1 is a “three-down back.”
“Seeing his explosiveness, the different things that he’s capable of both in the pass game, protection and run game just is really exciting. It allows you to have a true three-down back,” said Hackett on Friday in Florham Park.
Hall exceeded 21.0 miles per hour on multiple runs and led all NFL running backs in pass receptions (76) last year. He also isn’t afraid to pick up a blitzer in pass pro.
The 2022 second-round draft pick was on a rep count for the early portion of the 2023 season before fully regaining his pre-injury stamina.
“I want to be just be out there and be healthy again. I know that if I can be healthy and be a three-down back, then everything I want, I’m going to be able to do this season,” said Hall, who finished six yards shy of the 1,000-yard rushing mark last season.
Hall lasted throughout the rigors of a full 17-game schedule as a bright spot on one of the NFL’s least-productive offenses. He scored a team-high nine touchdowns.
Heading into Year 3 completely healthy, Hall looks as ready as ever.
“It’s funny. You look at last year and he hadn’t really done a ton of practice. So, we went into that Buffalo game last year and it was going to be exciting to see kind of what he had done just because what he had gone through to get to where he was,” said Hackett. “Now he’s had all the offseason, he’s had all the training camp.”
The third year may wind up truly being the charm for the emerging superstar.
