The Jets continued their head-coaching search Saturday with a name very familiar to New England Patriots fans.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, New York scheduled an interview with Rex Ryan on Tuesday. The ESPN analyst has been out of coaching since his Buffalo Bills tenure in 2016. He interviewed for the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator position last offseason but turned it down. The 62-year-old is 46-50 in his head-coaching career and 4-2 in the playoffs.
The Jets face an uncertain future with Aaron Rodgers’ future in doubt. They fired Robert Saleth and Joe Douglas midseason leaving them without a head coach and general manager. New York reportedly interviewed Ron Rivera and Louis Riddick for their head coach and GM positions, respectively.
Gang Green also reportedly was the first to interview Mike Vrabel, who also scheduled interviews with the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears. It’s unknown how the Patriots feel about Vrabel speaking with a division rival, but he reportedly might use the Jets as “leverage” since he has his eyes set on the New England position if it became open.
New York appears to be doing its due diligence. However, it is notable that two candidates — Ryan and Riddick — are ESPN analysts since Jets leadership reportedly keeps a close eye on what’s being said on TV and social media.
