Kendrick Perkins names New York Knicks player who has ‘definitely entered’ into the MVP race
We’re not even into January yet but the race to become 2025’s NBA MVP is beginning to hot up.
Some of the biggest names in the league are being mentioned as front-runners for the award this season including Boston Celtics Jayson Tatum and Milwaukee Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo.
NBA analysis has ranked the top MVP candidates, a new name could be on the MVP trophy if predictions come true.
The MVP award has been won three of the last four years by Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic. The Serbian recently managed what only two NBA players have ever done in history.
However, it was not Jokic who Kendrick Perkins has named as a potential MVP candidate.
Perkins names Karl-Anthony Towns as MVP candidate
The New York Knicks are one of the most in-form teams in the NBA and helped improve their season record to 15-9 following a 113-108 win over the Toronto Raptors.
One player that has shown their worth in recent performances has been Karl-Anthony Towns who again impressed with 24 points, 15 rebounds and six assists in the game.
His performance did not go unnoticed by former NBA player Kendrick Perkins who has tipped the star as a potential MVP candidate.
Perkins tweeted out to his followers on X saying: “KAT has definitely entered into the Top 5 early MVP conversation.”
Towns impressive form will be a blow to the Minnesota Timberwolves who traded away the star in October. The trade was questioned by former Timberwolves player Kevin Garnett.
Towns’ impressive numbers for the New York Knicks
The Knicks’ impressive record in the Eastern Conference is certainly partly thanks to Towns’ impressive season stats.
Towns has built up a strong partnership with Jalen Brunson this season and this has helped the 7ft monster to be on course to smash his best-ever season stats.
Season | 2022-23 | 2023-24 | 2024-25 |
Points | 20.8 | 21.8 | 25.1 |
Rebounds | 8.1 | 8.3 | 13.3 |
Assists | 4.8 | 3.0 | 3.1 |
The impressive form at the Knicks is clear to see with Towns currently smashing his average rebounds and assists from his past two seasons which were played at the Timberwolves.
Towns has only had one season in the NBA where he averaged more than his current 25.1 points per game and that was in 2019-20 with an average of 26.5.
With his name now mentioned among those at the top of the MVP tree Towns will want to continue his impressive form.
