Kendrick Perkins says New York Knicks have ‘unlocked’ new version of top star – it’s the key to their success
The New York Knicks are in a purple patch of form right now and extended their unbeaten run to nine games following their victory over the Utah Jazz.
Their last defeat came in a 100-108 loss to the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA Cup back on December 12th and the side is currently breaking records for fun.
Following the 119-103 victory over the Jazz the side extended their record to 24-10 to see them sit third in the Eastern Conference.
Despite the absence of Jalen Brunson, the Knicks were still able to secure the victory with Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns showing their scoring prowess, combining for 58 points.
Perkins reveals Knicks have ‘unlocked’ different Towns
While the quality of KAT has never been questioned he appears to have taken his game to another level since arriving at the Knicks.
The 29-year-old was traded by the Minnesota Timberwolves in October 2024, something that Perkins blames Anthony Edwards for.
Towns recently broke a Knicks record by becoming the first since Enes Freedom to record at least 30 points and 20 rebounds in a game. It was the sixth time he had done this in his NBA career, and he made that seven in the win over the Jazz.
He scored 31 points alongside 21 rebounds and 4 assists in another dominant display that left Perkins full of praise.
Taking to X, Perkins said: “New York definitely has unlocked a different KAT.
“He’s been on some other s___ since he arrived in the City.”
Exploring KAT’s numbers since leaving Timberwolves
Perkins is clearly a big fan of Towns and it’s not hard to see why given his season numbers, the former NBA star recently tipped KAT as a potential MVP and his recent showings haven’t hurt that suggestion.
Towns currently sits second in the league for average defensive rebounds per game with a staggering 13.5, only Sacramento Kings Domantas Sabonis averages more with 13.6.
Alongside teammate Josh Hart, Towns has secured more than 60 rebounds since Christmas. However, it’s not just his rebounds that are thriving.
Karl-Anthony Towns | Timberwolves 23/24 | Knicks 24/25 |
Points | 21.8 | 24.9 |
Rebounds | 8.0 | 13.7 |
Assists | 3.1 | 3.3 |
Whilst there is still a long way to go this season Towns is well on course to picking up some personal accolades this year as well as helping the Knicks with a deep playoff run.
All is looking well in New York as the team looks to progress beyond last year’s conference semifinal defeat to the Indiana Pacers.
