Knicks’ Jalen Brunson undergoes hand surgery

New York Knicks All-Star guard Jalen Brunson underwent successful surgery on his left hand, the team announced Wednesday. The Knicks said Brunson will be re-evaluated in six to eight weeks.

The 27-year-old fractured his hand in New York’s season-ending loss to the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the second round of the playoffs. Brunson said the injury occurred in the third quarter when he swiped down at Tyrese Haliburton and felt a change in his hand.

He went to the locker room briefly and returned to the game for 14 seconds, only to check back out with 3:02 left in the quarter. He did not return to the game, which ended in a 130-109 loss.

“I thought I just jammed it, to be honest with you,” Brunson said about his brief return to the game. “I looked down and knew something was wrong.”

Brunson finished the regular season averaging 28.7 points, 6.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds and earning his first All-Star selection. In the postseason, he added averages of 32.4 points and 7.5 assists per game.

The Knicks dealt with multiple injuries during the playoffs and were already playing without OG Anunoby, Julius Randle, Bojan Bogdanović and Mitchell Robinson at the time of Brunson’s injury.

On Wednesday, the team also announced Bogdanović underwent successful surgery on his left wrist and will be re-evaluated in six to eight weeks. It marks his second surgery within a month after his season ended in April. The Philadelphia 76ers’ Nicolas Batum fell on Bogdanović during their first-round playoff series and Bogdanović subsequently underwent foot surgery.
