Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson hosts sixth annual basketball camp for local youth

New York Knick Mitchell Robinson, a former Chalmette High School basketball star, continues to give back to the community by hosting an annual basketball camp in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana.

This year marks the sixth iteration of the event, which takes place at the Val Riess Sports Complex in Chalmette. Mitch foots the entire bill, making the camp free for local youth.

Robinson uses this opportunity to share his skills and knowledge with aspiring young basketball players. The camp caters to boys and girls aged 9-17, providing them with structured learning that includes drill work, station training, and full-court games designed to improve their basketball abilities. We cannot confirm if campers learn to shoot free throws.

“Some of those kids, you know, you can give them a dream, give them hope,” said Robinson in a local TV interview. “That’s really what I try to do, [show them] you can do whatever you set your mind to.”

By returning to his hometown and organizing this camp, the 26-year-old Robinson continues to show his commitment to nurturing talent and supporting the community that helped shape his career. The event not only offers BBall training but also inspires local youth by showing them the fruits of hard work and dedication.

Helping Mitch with the camp is Butch Stockton. Stockton was Robinson’s high school basketball coach at Chalmette, where he recognized Robinson’s potential and helped develop his skills. Their relationship deepened when Stockton’s wife became ill. Robinson visited her in the hospital regularly, and after she passed away last September, the NBA star brought Stockton to live with him in New York. The arrangement has proven beneficial for both, with Mitch helping Butch through his grief while Stockton continues to mentor Robinson.

“He always wanted to give something back to the parish community, he always comes back and does things,” said Stockton in the news segment. “What other camp can you think of where the players and campers can come and get a free lunch and a free t-shirt, and it doesn’t cost them anything? Everything in this camp comes out of Mitchell Robinson.”

The mission of the Mitchell Robinson III Youth Foundation is to empower and uplift young individuals from underprivileged backgrounds through sports, education, and community engagement. Mitch is known as a joker in the locker room and can be counted on for hilarious quotes, but his foundation’s work and the kindness he has shown his former coach prove that Robinson has serious heart. (By all accounts, he’s also a great teammate.)

As for Knicks basketball, the news is good! Mitch is out of the walking boot he’s worn since his last ankle surgery and is steadily working toward his return to the Knicks next season. Keep up the good work, big fella. Much respect.
