Knicks News: Karl-Anthony Towns Lure Forces James Dolan to End Villanova Dream Before Mikal Bridges’ Debut
Another massive shift coming in New York! Well, the Knicks have been on fire this summer with blockbuster signings and trades. Sure enough, their biggest move so far was the addition of Mikal Bridges as it united the Villanova Boys and boosted their title aspirations. However, it looks like the Villanova Dream will no longer become a reality as James Dolan has stunned the basketball world with another astounding trade. The addition? All-Star Center Karl-Anthony Towns!
Yes, as per the latest report by Shams Charania, the Timberwolves have traded KAT to the Knicks in arguably the biggest trade of the summer. Sure enough, it solves the Knicks’ length problem. But they had to give up two major stars in return as star forward Julius Randle and sharpshooter Donte DiVincenzo have been acquired by the Wolves as part of the exchange. Moreover, Minnesota also gets a first-round pick via Detroit.
However, the move does shatter the Nova Boys’ dream to play together after years as Donte will no longer be part of the team. And that’s heartbreaking considering how excited he was when Bridges became his teammate, “It’s not even believable, to be honest with you. It’s not a situation where we tried to go out and do it, we talked about it. It’s never been like that. Everybody kinda just went along with their own path and ended up back with each other.”

Meanwhile, Bridges went on a nostalgic trip when he reunited with his college teammates, “It’s surreal. Coming here, it makes me feel like a young kid again, with all the memories. When I think about basketball when I was young, and the old school, it was always the Knicks.” While fans would have loved to see the Nova Boys in action once again, it made perfect sense for Dolan to pounce on the opportunity of acquiring a superstar like Towns.
Karl-Anthony Towns could solve the Knicks’ major issue
On paper, adding Towns to the roster seems like a genius move by Dolan. While Jalen Brunson and Co. finished as the second seed in the East this year, they constantly struggled in the playoffs because of their lack of length. With Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson out for most of the season due to injuries, the onus fell on Isaiah Hartenstein to be the rim protector. And he did the job pretty well. But Hartenstein left the Knicks earlier this summer and signed a lucrative deal with the Thunder.

When Tom Thibodeau was asked about his plan to tackle the length problem following Hartenstein’s departure, he said, “We could see Julius more at the 5.” Yes, the head coach wanted to occasionally play Randle as a Center when he has spent most of his career as a Power Forward. Surely, that would have been a massive risk, especially knowing that he was coming off a major shoulder surgery and is still recovering.
But with KAT on the team, the Knicks now have a seven-footer who is comfortable playing Center and is an elite rim protector. With a career-average of 1.3 blocks, he will be a solid defensive presence for the team. Moreover, he can easily average 20+ points consistently and is arguably the best shooting big man in the league. Just last season, KAT shot 41.6% from deep range, which are impressive numbers for a player at any position. While Donte and Randle’s departure is a big blow, KAT’s addition is a massive upgrade for the Knicks and could likely lead them closer to winning a championship. Do you agree?
