The 2023-34 season for the New York Knicks should be classified as a successful one, even if it ended in bitter heartbreak. New York was knocked out of the playoffs in the second round by the Indiana Pacers, despite being arguably the better team. Unfortunately for the Knicks, injuries completely ravaged the team at the worst possible time. Even in Game 7 against the Pacers, guard Jalen Brunson injured his hand and was forced to exit the game.
Now entering the offseason, the Knicks will be looking at ways to upgrade the team so they can go even further next season. They have some contracts that opposing teams may be interested in, while also holding multiple first-round picks that they can use in trades. New York is fairly set at the guard positions but they could use another legitimate big man.
One Eastern Conference general manager believes that the Knicks could target Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves if he were to be placed on the trade block.
“That team (the Timberwolves) is in flux,” one Eastern Conference GM told Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports. “They want to keep building off what they did this year, but they just can’t afford it. So I would think it is 100 percent expected that if they move on from him when the dust settles, the Knicks are going to be there.”
While it may seem odd that Towns could be available, especially after the Timberwolves run to the Western Conference Finals, Minnesota is heading into a tough cap situation. Unloading the contract of Towns could help ease things, potentially opening the door for a team like the Knicks to strike. It remains to be seen whether Minnesota will look to move Towns but the Knicks will be waiting.
Pairing Towns with Brunson and possibly OG Anunoby, if they can re-sign him, could help push New York forward in the Eastern Conference. Towns has played under Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau before, during their days in Minnesota together, so he understands the grind that Thibodeau expects.
The Knicks could send the Timberwolves a player like Julius Randle back, with some draft picks, so both sides stay in contention. Randle has two years left on his current contract but the final year is a player option at $30 million. Towns on the other hand is on a supermax extension and is scheduled to make $49 million next season. This could be a rare win-win trade for both sides but only time will tell if the Wolves are open to dealing their star big man.
