Knicks’ Roster Battle Heats Up After New York Signs New Veteran

The New York Knicks have added a seasoned presence to their roster just ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season, announcing the signing of veteran forward Marcus Morris Sr. to an Exhibit 9 contract.

This move comes after Morris spent the previous season with both the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Exhibit 9 contract offers non-guaranteed terms and protects the Knicks financially in the event of a significant injury during the preseason. Morris will compete alongside recently signed guard Landry Shamet for the final roster spot, providing the Knicks with depth at the forward position as they round out their training camp lineup.

A Familiar Face Returns to New York

This signing marks a return to familiar territory for Morris, who previously played for the Knicks during the 2019-20 season.

During that stint, Morris delivered the best statistical performance of his career, averaging 19.6 points per game over 43 appearances, including a standout 38-point performance against the Los Angeles Clippers.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Marcus Morris Sr, New York Knicks Updates

After a brief stay in New York, Morris was traded to the Clippers as part of a multi-team deal that brought Mo Harkless to the Knicks.

Since then, Morris has had stints with the Clippers, 76ers, and Cavaliers, including an impactful postseason appearance for Cleveland in the 2024 NBA Playoffs, where he played in nine games, starting one.

Depth Chart and Impact

Morris will be vying for a role within a Knicks lineup that features notable talent such as Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, and Mikal Bridges. If Morris makes the final roster, he could provide veteran leadership and shooting ability, having shot 40.3% from beyond the arc during his time with Philadelphia and Cleveland last season.

With Morris joining the Knicks, the team’s depth chart for the 2024-25 season is shaping up. Brunson leads the point guard rotation, backed by Cameron Payne and Miles McBride. Mikal Bridges and Donte DiVincenzo solidify the shooting guard spot, while OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Morris provide versatility on the wing.

Julius Randle and Precious Achiuwa a lot of the duties at the four spot, but Morris is capable of sliding over there. With Mitchell Robinson anchoring the center, supported by Jericho Sims and Ariel Hukporti, it still appears like New York is due to trade for a center.

While Morris’ Exhibit 9 deal doesn’t guarantee a roster spot, his experience and shooting touch could be valuable assets as the Knicks finalize their team for the upcoming season.
