The Knicks are 7.5-point spread favorites and the game total is 217 points scored.

Towns boosted Knicks on Wednesday night

New York earned a gutsy win at Miami on Wednesday, pulling away in the second half to win by nine. Karl-Anthony Towns had a breakthrough performance, scoring 44 points on 17-for-25 shooting, including 4-for-5 from three-point distance. Jalen Brunson scored 18 of his 22 points after halftime, and Mikal Bridges added 17 points for the Knicks, who trailed by 13 in the third quarter before flipping a switch.

It was a significant bounce-back win for NY after a disappointing six-point home loss to Cleveland on Monday. The Knicks shot 32.1 percent from beyond the arc and committed 16 turnovers, as Brunson had an off night (8-for-24 shooting) and Towns attempted just eight field goals.

The Knicks have been hit or miss to start the season, but expectations are sky-high in the Big Apple. The acquisitions of Towns and Bridges boost New York’s star power, making it a clearcut contender in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. The Knickerbockers rank 9th in NET rating this season, including 6th in offensive rating and tenth in defensive rating, per Dunks and Threes. They have faced the second-toughest schedule through four games.

Detroit has faced a brutal schedule

The Pistons picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday in the City of Brotherly Love, dominating Philadelphia on the glass (+12 rebounding margin). Detroit committed 17 turnovers resulting in 23 points for the 76ers, but overcame those mistakes by knocking down 15 three-pointers (41.7 3PT%). Jaden Ivey (23 points) and Cade Cunningham (22 points) paced the Pistons, who led by as many as 21 points.

Detroit is off to a 1-4 start, but it has played the fourth-toughest strength of schedule, with games against Indiana, Cleveland, Boston, Miami and Philly. While it wasn’t the start to the season Michigan’s team envisioned, those challenging matchups will have them battle-tested.

The Pistons were the worst team in the NBA last season, winning only 14 games. They made significant changes this offseason, adding Tobias Harris (17.2 PPG and 6.5 RPG with Philadelphia), Tim Hardaway Jr. (14.4 PPG with Dallas) and Malik Beasley (11.3 PPG with Milwaukee) while subtracting Quentin Grimes, James Wiseman and Evan Fournier, among others. They also hired J.B. Bickerstaff as their new head coach. Detroit is 26th in NET rating this season, including 24th in offensive rating and 27th in defensive rating.

Pistons Injury Report: SF Ausar Thompson (illness) is out versus New York.

I’ll lay the points with the Knicks on Friday versus the Pistons.

New York picked up a statement win on Wednesday, as Towns dominated in a challenging matchup versus Bam Adebayo. The Knicks rallied in the second half of that game, building momentum and erasing the frustration built up in losses to Boston and Cleveland. Aside from Towns’ showing, NY also made a strong impression in the rebounding and three-point shooting departments after struggling in their losses.

While a win is a win, Detroit beat a depleted Philadelphia team missing Joel Embiid and Paul George. While it should hold its own on the glass, I’m not as confident in the home team’s ability to defend the perimeter. Towns will force Detroit’s bigs out of the paint, and his pick-and-roll game with Brunson will be tough for them to defend. I expect NY to get quality looks from beyond the arc and take advantage of Detroit’s miscues (25th in turnovers) to win and cover comfortably.

Prediction: Knicks -7.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Betting Trend: The under is 30-15 in Detroit’s last 45 games (+13.50 units/27% ROI).

I’m wagering on the total to be under 217 in Friday’s Knicks vs. Pistons game.

New York and Detroit are the two slowest-tempo teams in the NBA this season, averaging 94.8 (NY) and 96.6 (DET) possessions per 48 minutes. The Knicks also average the longest offensive possessions (16.1 seconds) per game. That isn’t a change for New York, as the Knicks ranked last (95.7) last season, but it is a much slower tempo for the Pistons, who ranked ninth in pace (100.2). Detroit ranks 24th in offensive possession length (14.9 seconds), as well.

I’m expecting a slower-paced, defensive game on Friday in Detroit!

Prediction: Under 217
