Kyrgios withdraws from UTS New York semi-final

“I loved being back on court, and there was no better place to start my return than at the UTS in New York. It felt great to play in a competitive atmosphere again, and feel the love from the UTS fans!
Unfortunately, I woke up with a stiff wrist and I have to follow advice from my physio, I’m at the later stages of my rehab and have to take it slow to make sure I don’t have any set backs. I am so close to a return on the tour! That’s why I can’t compete against Gael today and need to withdraw from the tournament. I want to thank Patrick for allowing UTS to be a big part of my Journey, and to the fans, thank you for all the support it goes a long way! I will be back.”

Kyrgios on the withdrawal

The former Wimbledon finalist looked like he had never been away from the tour when he faced Casper “The Ice Man” Ruud, beating the Norwegian three quarters to love (17-8, 21-9, 15-11), with his serve looking particularly strong.

His withdrawal means that Stefanos “El Greco” Tsitsipas moves into the semi-finals, with the following changes to the order of play:

Order of play (August 23rd) – official

  1. Classification match 1 – 4pm : Ruud / shapovalov
  2. Classification match 2 – 5pm : rublev / humbert
  3. ⁠semi final 1 – 6pm : tsitsipas / monfils
  4. ⁠semi final 2 – 7 pm: de minaur / bublik
  5. ⁠final : 8.30 pm
