Lady Vols basketball vs Iowa final score: Tennessee relies on defense in first ranked win
NEW YORK – Lady Vols basketball relied on its defense to notch its first ranked win of the season.
Tennessee beat No. 20 Iowa 78-68 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in the inaugural Women’s Champions Classic on Saturday. The Lady Vols (7-0) pulled out a gritty win to stay undefeated and hand the Hawkeyes (8-1) their first loss. It’s the first ranked win for first-year coach Kim Caldwell
Tennessee’s high-pressure defense bothered Iowa, which committed 30 turnovers. UT scored 42 points off turnovers.
Neither team was able to create separation in the first half, each of them going on their runs, and it was tied 35-35 at halftime. The Lady Vols struggled to keep pace with Iowa on the boards and got outrebounded 48-33.
Talaysia Cooper led the Lady Vols in scoring with 23 points and added six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.
